USMC: 235 Years of Valor

by BD Pisani ♦ 10 nov 2010

In celebrating the birthday of the United States Marine Corps, we also celebrate our freedom. We honor this day and the sacrifices made by generations of young Americans who served under the Corp's scarlet and gold Battle Color.

USMC: Semper Fi, Do or Die

Hail the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. For 235 years, those accepted for duty in the United States Marine Corps have served our nation with the utmost valor, honor, and sacrifice. Commissioned in 1775 by the Continental Congress to spearhead our struggle against superior British naval forces, the USMC has never faltered in battle nor ever wavered in its fealty.

From Tuns Tavern in 1775 to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2010, United States Marines have carved out a legacy fighting in places few would know, in conditions no one should ever endure.

Throughout its long and sterling history, Corps honor and traditions have been paid for in blood. Americans can see this symbolized today by the blood stripe worn on the dress trousers of officers and Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs). From its genesis to present-day - first at sea, then on land and in the air - the Marine Corps motto of Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful) has never been forsaken.

First in, last out, always with honor for Corps and Country.

Our nation's original shock troops, our first-in-battle "Point of the Spear," are known to Americans by a variety of monikers that include Jarheads, Leathernecks, Grunts, and Gyrenes. To America's enemies, however, their determination and ferocity in battle have earned them names such as Green Devils, American Devils, and Devil Dogs (Teufelhunden). Whatever the label, Marines have always been first in line to answer America's call.

Today, when you see a United States Marine in uniform, walk up to him or her, shake their hand, and wish them a very Happy Birthday - they will appreciate your goodwill more than you will ever know.

As you read the USMC prayer that follows, remember that Marines are Marines forever, and are expected to have loyalty to "Corps and Country" and to their fellow fighting men and women, for the rest of their days and beyond:

The Marine Corp Prayer

Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose in deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my loved ones and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my family.

Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance. Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me.

Make me considerate of those committed to my leadership. Help me to wear my uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.

If I am inclined to doubt; steady my faith; if I am tempted, make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again. Guide me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom by which I may understand the answer to my prayer.

Amen.

Semper Fidelis.
