Caveat GOP: Don't blow it

by BD Pisani ♦ 20 oct 2010

A concerned and energized American majority, bolstered by conservatives, is about to descend on the polls and once again invest its trust in the Republican Party. This chance may be the GOP's last unless they have the courage to govern by principles and not politics.

Don't Betray Our Trust

Within the past few decades we witnessed two Republican presidential administrations and a Republican congressional majority inexorably drift away from conservatism's summa principia of fiscal responsibility, limited government, and free enterprise.

Americans watched as bedrock principles were compromised or bartered away by Republicans in the name of "bipartisanship" or worse, intimidation. In the midst of it all, voter resentment grew as Republicans arrogantly squandered the political integrity and cutting-edge vision bequeathed them by President Reagan and his leadership by example. The national exuberance once generated by the Congressional Revolution of 1994 was carelessly drained away by appeasement, entitlement, and cronyism.

In 2006 and again in 2008 the Republican Party establishment championed moderation and routinely excoriated the conservative "idealists" amongst them. They went along to get along, vainly hoping state-run media would finally like them. They helped spend the nation into debt to curry votes from groups who would never vote for them, and belittled evangelicals and "far-right radicals" who once did. Their reward? Republicans lost the Congress, the White House, their integrity, and the people's trust.

Worst of all, they must bear some of the blame for the systematic ruination of America by their authoritative successors.

Another chance

We are losing the greatness of America and the independent spirit of her people, and no real American - of any political affiliation - can stomach such loss. That is why in a few days hence, the American majority will most probably decide to give Republicans another chance to direct the House of Representatives. The Senate will probably remain under the control of the Democrat Party - but by a razor-thin majority and thus their despotic rule will be ended.

If true, those newly elected are about to be afforded a unique opportunity to lead, and to govern by ideals which once served as a guiding compass for those they replace. They will be ushered into office with the best wishes of the American people, because Americans want them to succeed in reversing the nation's descent into impoverished mediocrity and governance by decree.

There is no such thing as a conservative version of Big Government; it can never exist, and those who promote such nonsense are sycophants. The newly-elected Republicans must bring this perspective to Washington and live by it. They must also be aware and wary: State-run media and the ruling class liberals who control D.C. society will never accept them, support them, or wish them well.

Beware

Many of the vastly outnumbered Republicans in Congress - the stalwart conservatives - who have been holding the line against overwhelming majorities in both Houses will soon have help. They have consistently battled the Obama regime and the Democrat Congress, often without the support of their more wobbly colleagues. Although serious harm has been done to the nation, it would be far worse today without their courage and determination. The American people have taken notice, and expect those they send to serve in the 112th Congress to join in the cause of national recovery.

Americans can take the truth, even when it is bad news; They just dig in and work harder. However, Americans will not tolerate liars, and they have been repeatedly manipulated and purposely misled since 2008. Which is why, after what has happened to the country, a majority of Americans are now demanding that their representatives be truthful, obey the Constitution, honor their campaign pledges, and heed the concerns of the electorate. Anything less is no longer acceptable.

Those who will soon be heading to Washington must realize that frittering away one's core beliefs for the misguided sake of political expediency will not lead to the success and prosperity of the nation. It will, however, most assuredly lead to the enhancement of those who desire as much government control over people's lives as possible.

Remember

Our nation was founded on the concepts of self-reliance and individualism, not collectivism and nannyism. By striving to better ourselves we better the lives of our families, our neighbors, our communities, and our nation. Individual liberty is what sets this country apart from every other - we term this American exceptionalism. We also acknowledge that our creation is spiritual, not governmental, and that our freedom is a natural essence of our creation rather than some regal or dictatorial boon.

The 2010 election is merely the first step in the recovery of our nation. There will be many hard choices ahead and future elections to win before we regain economic stability, a robust and unfettered business climate, individual freedoms lost, and control of our national sovereignty. It will take years to restore constitutional authority, undo the damage, and reverse the decline set in motion by the statist regime.

Those of you who win the trust of the voters must not forsake them or your oaths. The American people are trusting you with their lives, livelihoods, and the futures of their children. They have seen the harm unrestricted government can unleash and are frightened of its power to control when unchecked. Take these thoughts with you, remember them always, and serve accordingly.

To think and govern any other way will guarantee our failure as a nation.
