Extremists, open borders, and doughnuts
As though taken from a page right out of an H.G. Wells novel, American sovereignty is under assault in the Chicago area. This bit of multicultural madness dovetails nicely with the beliefs of Democrat vote-mongers and those who demand that our government open its borders to lawbreakers.
This summer, all 5,000 of Dunkin' Donuts franchisees were required to participate in a government database program to verify that their workers were here legally. The company was responding to customer concerns about illegal employees, and the Applebee's franchises did the same. Sounds reasonable enough, right? Well, not according to some, particularly those who insist on voting rights, tax-free jobs, free health care, and free education for illegal aliens.
The discrimination card
An Illinois group dubiously named the Chicago Workers Collaborative is calling for a boycott of the two nationally-known companies. Not because the companies are discriminating on the basis of race. Not because of religious bias. And not because they don't like the color of an applicant's skin.
Oh no, nothing like that. Dunkin' Donuts and Applebee's are accused of discriminating against immigrant workers whose names don't match their social security numbers.
That is correct, you read rightly. The two American companies in question are being boycotted because they refuse to hire anyone—ANYONE—who does not have a valid social security number.
According to Martino Unzuerta, a CWC spokesman, they are hoping not only to mobilize their vote, but also use their buying power to force the kind of change they want. In other words, force American companies to break the law and hire illegal aliens.
The CWC is using a standard Social Security Administration (SSA) practice as the basis for their boycott. This is how it works: The SSA routinely sends out "no match" letters to a company when employees' names and social security numbers don't match. This is often due to spelling errors, omission of information, or unreported name changes.
However, the CWC is worried because the SSA has stated that it plans to send out eight million no match letters. Everybody, including each member of the CWC, knows that there can't possibly be that many misspelled or changed names, and that there are millions of discrepancies because there are millions of illegal aliens.
When losing, blame Bush
And of course, when something illegal doesn't go your way, blame President Bush. James Thindwa of the group Chicago Jobs with Justice stated: "The Bush administration wants to give the appearance that they are cracking down on undocumented immigration and workers are an easy scapegoat." Yet another lawbreaking group, the National Alliance for Immigration Rights, agrees. They want an immediate moratorium on all workplace raids and deportations.
This madness has spread to the point where Elvira Arellano, an illegal, sought refuge at a Chicago West Side church after being slated for deportation because she's undocumented. Her seven-year-old son, a U.S. citizen, will go to the nation's capital to try to save his mother. "I want President Bush to stop the raid and the deportation of my mom so she can stay with me," said Saul Arellano, Elvira's son. Heart rending, isn't it?
Not really. Elvira planned an illegal crossing of the Mexican border seven years ago so little Saul would be born in the United States. This is not heart rending — this is disgusting — but not quite as disgusting as the fact that out of more than eight million businesses in the United States, only 6.200 participated in the SSA survey.
Dunkin' Donuts and Applebee's just earned my respect and my money. I will make it a personal priority to trade at their businesses and I hope you do the same.
