A defining moment in America

by BD Pisani - 2006 apr 10

Ahem. This is great. Just perfect. I purposely waited weeks before commenting on the latest chapter in America's illegal alien Fandango, just to see what the princes and princesses in the House and Senate would do to at least begin fixing what is a very real crisis. I should wait for pigs to fly...

While mind-boggling millions of illegal aliens are busily and freely partaking of all the wonderful societal benefits for which everyday American citizens and legal aliens must earn and pay, we are afforded nightly views of protesting throngs, waving the flags of other nationalities, demanding a stop to any proposed legislation that would hinder amnesty for illegals or curtail sneaking into the United States of America.

Lawbreakers demand rights

That's right. Demanding. Lawbreakers demanding citizenship rights. Keep in mind that each of these millions of illegal aliens sneak in from countries where what passes for the rule of law is oppressive and unrecognizable to any law-abiding American. Keep in mind that each of these millions of illegal aliens sneak in from countries in which nothing remotely resembling America's prosperous lower-to-upper middle class, representing more than 80 percent of our population, exists.

And what do our elected royals do? Why, they watch the protesting throngs via Old Media, listen to the spin and sob stories, consult focus groups, and take the best course of action that will ensure an election night victory. What's going on here?

1. Most of the so-called conservatives don't want to lose power in Congress, so they pretend that their proposed requirements for illegal aliens to become citizens are harsh, when in reality they are nothing more than a blanket amnesty.

2. Most of the radical liberals want to gain power in Congress, so they help organize all of the protest marches, mobilize their allies in academia, send out speakers such as Mrs. Clinton to tell the illegals that they can have anything they want if they support the Democratic Party, and dictate to their toadies in Old Media the spin du jour and what they can and cannot present to the gullible rubes in flyover country.

3. Both disingenuous groups do their utmost to block any congressional attempt to properly address the crisis and personally impugn the few bipartisan members with the conviction and courage to strictly enforce or strengthen existing immigration laws, enhance existing border impediments, and prevent any form of soft-soap amnesty reward for lawbreakers.

Don't they understand that the average illegal doesn't give a fig for the United States of America or the constitutional rule of law? Don't they understand that the average illegal is here to work or see what can be gleaned from the American system and not be willingly assimilated by it? Don't they understand that the average illegal is most definitely NOT an immigrant seeking immersion into the American English language, American customs, American legal system, American tax system, and American society?

They once wanted to belong, contribute

My grandparents were immigrants. My daughter-in-law was an immigrant. My wife was an immigrant. They were not illegal aliens who cut in at the head of the line, who broke the law, whose families became non-paying burdens on our social and educational services, or who justified breaking American law because they felt no fealty to American law. No, those people dear to me went through the immigration process and obeyed the immigration laws. My grandparents understood even when they were escaping European fascism and were told they couldn't enter the country because of a quota system. They understood even when forced to endure 18 harrowing months in yet another country before they were allowed access to their longed-for Land of Opportunity.

Grandparents, daughter, wife -- They emigrated because they wanted to become a part of the American story, the American dream, the American legacy of opportunity and freedom; They wanted to become citizens, learn the language, raise their children as Americans, and simply have a chance to work hard and strive to achieve, because they knew that in America all things are possible. And they did it legally, gladly, without complaint.

They wanted to contribute to as well as benefit from the blessedness that is the United States of America. They wanted to belong to America. They wanted to be America.

You don't reward lawbreakers, not even if it will help you to retain or obtain power. You don't sabotage the security of the nation for personal gain. You don't purposefully undermine the three pillars crucial to maintaining our republic, the only one of its kind ever known by man: a common American language, an American culture or mindset, and the American constitutional rule of law.

How we treat with this issue will define us and set the course of our nation's doom, whether that be for good or ill.
