B2 Version 5.0 crashed but 5.1 is here

by BD Pisani - 2005 nov 22

Relaunch! Welcome to The B2 Journal Version 5.1. Before you send hate email, some of the links are not yet active because I had to construct 5.1 from the ground up and have only just finished with most of the main links. Why a new version? Because The B2 Journal Version 5.0 crashed and burned.

Yup. It's true. My attempt to update the style sheets and scripting of The B2 Journal in version 5.0 failed miserably because I did not design to compensate for all of the different browsers out there. Oh, it styled perfectly in Internet Explorer (Windows), but broke apart using the Mozilla Firefox browser. What a bummer.

"But B2, B2, what do you mean, 'different browsers'?" you query. "Why didn't you test it with 'different browsers' before you launched?" you further inquire, smug look on your acne-scarred puss.

Answer to Question One: Long story short, there is an entire world of browsers and browser versions out there, and they all define what you see on your monitor differently. They include (but are not limited to) Mozilla 1, 1.4; Firebird 0.7; IE/Win 5, 5.5, 6; IE/Mac 5.2; Safari 1; Opera/Win 6, 7.11; and perhaps the biggest pain of them all, Netscape/Win 4. And believe me, there are plenty more browsers and plenty more versions.

Answer to Question Two: Because B2 is an idiot. I was in a hurry to get 5.0 launched and had no other browsers loaded on my machine to test before publishing.

So there I was with an active website working with faulty layout that was breaking and defecating all over the Web. After contemplating the cleanest and most pain-free way to do myself in, I chickened out and decided to do something worse: redesign from the ground up. Fortunately, there are some real Web Wizards out there who graciously share their labors and knowledge with lowly Plebians. One of the aforementioned is Tonico Strasser of WebProducer.

Three years ago, Tonico developed a flexible Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) layout specifically designed to accommodate the plethora of browsers used. He hung the script out there for the public to use and after days of adaptation, I based version 5.1 on his earlier outstanding work.

When I finish up the About section, I will detail what his script can really do. Just remember that Palm City Gun is not yet working (thank you for promptness, ATF) and links to the earliest archive articles in the Issues section are not yet functioning. Perks is fine and contains some spectacular imagery. In the meantime, try re-sizing your browser or changing your browser font size to see what I mean about flexible.

Hope you like the new look and thanks for your patience.
