The success of USA Freedom Corps

by BD Pisani - 2005 nov 08

What is the USA Freedom Corps, you ask? To my mind, it is a darned good program, charged with promoting volunteer service in America by supporting Federal service programs, serving as a resource for non-profit organizations, recognizing volunteers, and helping to connect individuals with volunteer organizations in their own communities.

Sounds good, no? I think so, too. President Bush created USA Freedom Corps to build on the acts of service, sacrifice, and generosity that followed the tragedy of September 11. When he announced the program in his 2002 State of the Union Address, the president called on all Americans to commit their lives to serve a cause greater than themselves. Apparently his message resonated with many of us across the country.

Over the past three years, USA Freedom Corps has helped Americans answer that call. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 64.5 million Americans volunteered in 2004, an increase of more than 5 million since 2001. Those are pretty good numbers but after all, we Americans are a pretty generous and caring people. Volunteering and helping is the American way.

Ever wonder why good news like this is never reported by the Drive-by Media?
