To the warriors

And here most of us are, fat and happy in the afterglow of Independence Day. Many of us celebrated the 229th birthday of America the Beautiful, spent quality time with family and friends, and in one way or another benefited from the bounty that our beloved homeland affords.

But there are those of us who did not, could not do what most of us did this weekend, for they answered the volunteer's call to service and are far from the homeland shores. Don't forget them today, tomorrow, and for as long as they remain apart from us. The very next time you are with family and friends, take just a moment to publicly acknowledge their sacrifice and separation from loved ones as Rich Galen suggests:

Here is our heartfelt salute and never-ending gratitude to the warriors and the civilians wherever they are serving - some of whom we know; all of whom we should know - who see the need and volunteer to fill it. And to their families, their lovers, and their friends who pray for them every day.
