American flag desecration ban: Pro or con?

by BD Pisani - 2005 jun 23

Well, well, well. I see where yesterday, the House of Representatives approved a constitutional amendment that would give Congress the power to ban desecration of the American flag. This is extremely interesting, as you shall see by reading on.

By a 286-130 vote - eight more than needed - House members approved the amendment after a debate over whether such a ban would uphold or run afoul of the Constitution's free-speech protections. What makes this so interesting is that for the first time ever, a flag protection amendment stands a very real chance of passing in the Senate as well. If the amendment is approved in that chamber by a two-thirds vote, it would then move to each state for a special ratification vote. If approved by two-thirds of the states, it would then become a crime to desecrate the national symbol of the United States.

Now you regular readers know that Ol' B2 always voices his opinion, then provides reasons for such an opinion. But not this time, at least not in this entry. Oh no. I want you to think about this for a while and then reason out your own opinion. Perhaps in a week or two I'll share my view on the amendment and we can compare notes (here's a hint: think, don't feel - feeling is for unintelligent people).

Besides, you really don't expect me to be the only one to do all of the heavy lifting, all of the time, do you? Hmm?
